Overview
We currently run the DELTA course in an 8 month extensive face-to-face mode, Modules One, Two and Three.
The DELTA extensive course is suitable for candidates who would prefer to develop their teaching over a longer period of time, allowing teaching practice to occur with their own regular classes. It also gives candidates a lot of space to research and reflect on their teaching.
The course is suitable for teachers based in Budapest. There are three hours of input every week at International House, and tutors need to be able to observe your classes within the city.
The Aims of the DELTA
The aims of the DELTA are to improve the candidates' understanding of...
The DELTA is now comprised of three separate modules.
Module One: Understanding Language
Methodology and Resources for Teaching
This is assessed through a written exam that occurs in December and June (for the extensive course, this is taken at the end of the course in June). It is comprised of two 90-minute papers taken on either side of a 30 minute break. Candidates are prepared for this throughout the course. In both papers, candidates are given authentic texts and ELT texts to comment on and evaluate.
Module Two: Developing Professional Practice
During the course, the candidates develop a portfolio of assignments, in which they apply their reading and research to their own views and experience of teaching. The portfolio is comprised of:
A minimum of 10 hours directed observation of peers.
Module Three: Extending Practice anf English Language Teaching Specialisation
This is assessed via an extended assignment of between words, to be submitted to Cambridge ESOL. For the assignment, the candidates select a specialist area such as young learners, business English or 1-1 teaching; they review key principles and practice within this area and design a short course taking into account the principles of course planning and assessment.
What you get?
Many candidates find that the DELTA has a dramatic impact on their teaching, broadening their understanding of teaching and learning processes, and getting them well on the way to being well-informed, principled practitioners. As a qualification, the DELTA is also a prerequisite in most language schools for a position in educational administration or teacher training.
Application procedure
The application procedure involves submitting a registration form and a written language awareness test, after which an oral interview is arranged (the interview can be done by telephone).
