Overview
We currently run the DELTA course in an 8 month extensive face-to-face mode, Modules One, Two and Three.

The DELTA extensive course is suitable for candidates who would prefer to develop their teaching over a longer period of time, allowing teaching practice to occur with their own regular classes. It also gives candidates a lot of space to research and reflect on their teaching.

The course is suitable for teachers based in Budapest. There are three hours of input every week at International House, and tutors need to be able to observe your classes within the city.

The Aims of the DELTA

The aims of the DELTA are to improve the candidates' understanding of...

  • the English language and its description
  • practices and principles of teaching
  • procedures for the formal and informal assessment of students, courses and evaluation of one's own teaching
  • a specialist area of teaching (for example, 1-1 teaching, young learners, business English)

The DELTA is now comprised of three separate modules.

Module One: Understanding Language

Methodology and Resources for Teaching

This is assessed through a written exam that occurs in December and June (for the extensive course, this is taken at the end of the course in June). It is comprised of two 90-minute papers taken on either side of a 30 minute break. Candidates are prepared for this throughout the course. In both papers, candidates are given authentic texts and ELT texts to comment on and evaluate.

Module Two: Developing Professional Practice

During the course, the candidates develop a portfolio of assignments, in which they apply their reading and research to their own views and experience of teaching. The portfolio is comprised of:

  • 4 separate Teaching Assignments. These involve reading for and writing a background essay of 2500 words, as well as planning, teaching and reflecting on a related 40 - 60 minute lesson.
  • A Professional Development Assignment, spread over the course, which encourages candidates to reflect on their teaching, identify action points, and undertake action research to improve these action points.

A minimum of 10 hours directed observation of peers.

  • Input, feedback and consultation time with highly experienced tutors.

Module Three: Extending Practice anf English Language Teaching Specialisation

This is assessed via an extended assignment of between words, to be submitted to Cambridge ESOL. For the assignment, the candidates select a specialist area such as young learners, business English or 1-1 teaching; they review key principles and practice within this area and design a short course taking into account the principles of course planning and assessment.

What you get?

Many candidates find that the DELTA has a dramatic impact on their teaching, broadening their understanding of teaching and learning processes, and getting them well on the way to being well-informed, principled practitioners. As a qualification, the DELTA is also a prerequisite in most language schools for a position in educational administration or teacher training.

Application procedure

The application procedure involves submitting a registration form and a written language awareness test, after which an oral interview is arranged (the interview can be done by telephone).

Application Requirements

This is a high level qualification, suitable for teachers who:

  • have an initial training qualification (such as the Cambridge CTEFLA or CELTA, the Trinity College Certificate or a Graduate or a Post Graduate TEFL or TESOL degree). It is unlikely to be appropriate if you have never received any practical methodology training that included regular teaching practice with observation and feedback.

  • have at least two years' varied experience teaching English. It is unlikely to be appropriate unless you have had regular experience of classes of at least six students, studying at a range of levels from Beginner to Advanced, preferably in both monolingual and multilingual environments.
